A recent business trip landed my husband and me at the King Salmon Motel and RV Park in Soldotna Alaska, also known as the Soldotna Best Western. Our stay here was pleasant and we enjoyed a clean, comfortable room with all the modern amenities that one would expect from a small Alaskan town. But it’s the Motel’s affiliated Restaurant that I’d like to brag on today.
The King Salmon Restaurant is located on the Kenai Spur Highway and is just across the parking lot from the motel. Although it’s under different management than the motel, the two businesses share the same owner.
This restaurant isn’t much to look at from the outside. As a matter of fact, we almost went somewhere else! But it’s proximity to the motel and the $15 breakfast vouchers we received when we first checked-in, lured us over there on the first morning of our stay in Soldotna. We were glad they did!
The food at this restaurant is exceptional! This is NOT a greasy spoon! They’re serving up good home-cooked meals at affordable prices and the portions that they serve will not let you go away hungry!
You can choose from a nice variety on the menu, which includes some of the local seafood favorites. The restaurant offers at least two listed specials for each meal of the day and they even let us use our motel breakfast vouchers at 4pm since my husband works nights and sleeps all day! He enjoyed eating his hearty “breakfast” from their all day breakfast menu and I enjoyed knowing that he’d have plenty of coffee to kick start his “day”!
The service wasn't always fast but it was definately friendly. From what I could see, the restaurant seemed to be a little understaffed for the volume of customers they received. The recent warm weather and an early start to the usual summer season of tourism, probably accounted for some of the longer wait times we experienced. Regardless of the reason, the waitresses were exceptionally delightful, apologizing for the delays, and the food more than made up for the extra time it took to get to the table. This all reflects good management and a pleasant working enviornment. I've waited tables before, and believe me it isn't always easy to put a smile on your face and to be polite when you have demanding customers, a busy work load, and very little hair left after pulling and tugging on it just to stay sane! My hat goes off to these gals that worked so hard to give us quality friendly service and to their boss who obviously values his employees!
I’m not a relative of anyone connected with this business and am not being compensated in any way for writing this, but I think that this restaurant’s staff and its management deserve some praise. I travel a lot and have eaten in all kinds of places. This one stands out and I will be visiting here again.
Whether you’re a local living in the area, or you’re a visitor traveling to the Kenai Peninsula for a little summer recreation, be sure to stop at the King Salmon Restaurant for a value packed meal! You’ll be glad you did!
